TO APPLY YOU MUST:
1. HAVE AN UNWEIGHTED GPA OF 3.0.
2. INCLUDE AT LEAST ONE CHARACTER REFERENCE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL. THIS MUST BE SOMEBODY THAT YOU HAVE VOLUNTEERED WITH OR YOU HAVE WORKED WITH DIRECTLY. THIS SHOULD NOT BE A FAMILY FRIEND, FAMILY MEMBER, OR TEACHER AT AK. TURN IN CHARACTER REFERENCES TO MS. SCHUENEMAN IN MC 14 BY TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31ST.
3. COMPLETE THE APPLICATION BEFORE MIDNIGHT OCTOBER 31ST.

SERVICE ACTIVITIES (EACH YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL)
SHORT ANSWER, "In your perspective, why is it important to serve others. What are the benefits to the person / organization and yourself. Honestly reflect on this - we are not looking for "fluff" answers. (Please limit your answer to 100 words or less.)"
SHORT ANSWER, "Leadership is often difficult to demonstrate at a school of 3000. In what ways can an individual be a leader without having that recognizable role of leadership. What does a quiet leader look like? What qualities do you feel that a leader must have and why? Finally, it what ways have you been a leader, either officially or in a more "quiet" way. Describe. Again, be honest and reflective. (Keep your answer between 100-200 words)"
SHORT ANSWER, "Describe any jobs that you currently have or have had. How have these jobs impacted your view of service and leadership? What has been the most difficult adjustment with working? How has your job helped you to be more empathetic to others?" (Keep your answer between 100-200 words)
SHORT ANSWER, "List below any honors, recognition, or awards you have received, either in or out of school. For example: honor roll, selection into Spanish Honor Society, community volunteer of the year, president of church youth group."
PARAGRAPH RESPONSES (approximately 500 characters (NOT WORDS) each - 1500 max)
1. From the eyes of your parent, from the eyes of your teacher, and from the eyes of your friends describe how you are perceived. What would each person / group say is your best characteristic? Which characteristic would your parents, friends, and teachers say is underdeveloped in you?
2. If you are inducted into the NHS, what do you most hope to gain from the experience? What is the most valuable characteristic that you bring to NHS and which part of you would you most like to see develop? (ie, leadership skills, service groups, etc.)
3. Academics - Academics is one of the key components for NHS consideration. Describe how you view yourself academically and what valleys and peaks you have experienced academically.

YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE PRESENTED TO AN INDEPENDENT FACULTY COUNCIL. USING A RUBRIC, THE COUNCIL MEMBERS WILL EVALUATE YOUR APPLICATION ON YOUR ACADEMIC, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, AND CHARACTER. YOUR ABILITY TO PRESENT YOURSELF IS KEY ON THIS APPLICATION AND ANY APPLICATION THAT YOU COMPLETE. THERE ARE SOME AREAS OF THE APPLICATION THAT WILL FACTOR MORE HEAVILY THAN OTHER CATEGORIES, BUT THE PROCESS IS FAIR AND THE COUNCIL IS IMPARTIAL. YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE GIVEN A LETTER & NUMBER (IE., A1) SO THAT ALL ASPECTS OF IT ARE FAIR AND IMPARTIAL.
THE TOTAL LIST OF APPLICANTS WILL GO OUT BEFORE THE FACULTY COUNCIL READS THE APPLICATIONS. WE WILL BE ASKING THE FACULTY TO REVIEW THE NAMES TO DETERMINE IF THERE ARE STUDENTS THAT HAVE SERIOUSLY VIOLATED THE HONOR CODE, SHOWN A LACK OF RESPECT IN THE CLASSROOM, OR ACTED IN A WAY THAT DOES NOT REPRESENT NHS. THOSE STUDENTS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR INDUCTION.
